When I´m asked about the kind of music we play in this record, I often find myself giving a long explanation: "it´s contemporary Venezuelan instrumental music", "it´s urban Venezuelan music", "it´s like a Venezuelan jazz", hmmm... How complicated! It´s all of these things and at the same time none. I´d prefer to just say that it´s music: music that expresses joy, melancholy, that can make you feel an urge to dance, or make you shiver, or shed a tear.
Only one thing is for sure: this is music made by a group of Venezuelan musicians who believe in universality and take elements from the contemporary world to add them into their proposal. That´s why it is not rare for me to hear the “Habanera” from the opera “Carmen” in Calipso rhythm with a good dose of rap; I´m also not surprised to hear a Bach sonata played in Venezuelan Joropo mode; and what about Julie Andrews in a Venezuelan beach dancing “My Favorite Things” to the beat of the Cumaco drums? This is worldmusic made with the HEART! |
