On October 2002, gathered at the home of Maestro Pablo Arévalo joined by Martha Senn and the scientist Jorge Reynolds we exchanged ideas about a fascinating subject: how could we make it possible for Martha to sing with the hunchback whales of the Colombian Pacific? That night thousands of proposals came up and I accepted, by intuition, without knowing yet if I would be able to do it, the challenge of composing a musical piece that would carry in essence all the ideas that we had discussed. It was a very unique project where the artistic, the scientific, the technological, the social, the ecological and the unimaginable would take place.
We agreed to take “In the sea” a piece that I had previously composed, as a reference. This piece tries to describe the magic and depth of the sea; I would experiment by adding the chants of the whales and Martha’s voice.
It then occurred to me, after listening to Dr. Reynolds scientific explanations and anecdotes and watching many documentaries on the whales’ life and migratory patterns to compose a descriptive work that would recreate the life cycle of hunchback whales and as a metaphor relate it with the life cycle of human beings knowing that both share several characteristics: we are mammals, we are born, grow up, we reproduce, we are happy or sad, we jump with joy and we sing to attract loved ones, we suffer the effects of aggressions, pollution and violence.
We decided to use the musical form “Cantata Experimental” which would allow us the possibility of incorporating technical and artistic elements with unlimited freedom.
Pacificanto is the perfect example to show the world that harmony within science, development, society, art and technology can be achieved. |
