HUÁSCAR COMENTA:
There are striking similarities between an opera and a "bolero"', however the biggest difference is the fact that to feel lovelessness in the opera we wait for two hours, while in the "bolero" it comes up in twenty seconds. Latin American people are passionate, romantic, fast and we dwell in the pain of love. We enjoy sleepless nights, the conquests, and the disilussions. We are inveterate dreamers and also deeply human. It seems we are the last survivors of Romanticism: we serenade and we write love poems.
When Leopoldo and I got together for this project, it was natural for us as academic musicians to reinvent these songs using trends and styles from the Romantic and Impressionist times. Our versions are covered with strong strokes of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Brahms and Debussy, as well as with the strong Latin flavor we carry in our blood.
So, we kept experimenting and we discovered that interpreting Gardel on Liszt style or Manzanero in the purest Chopin style was totally feasible. In order to accomplish it, we had two powerful allies: a piano and a flute.
The piano adds its strength and wide sound possibilities, and it merges with the sweetness of a flute which is in love; together, it seems their melodies reflect a nostalgic Moon, that night after night expect the arrival of its lover the Sun.
It was very enriching to work on this project with Leopoldo Betancourt. First, he is an extraordinary pianist who effortlessly achieves the transition from the classical world to the popular realm. And second, we both feel it is absolutely necessary to keep playing to celebrate love.
We learned something in our musical partnership: music is timeless and once we reach this sound spiritual ground, we are closer to God. "Dos Mundos"(Two Worlds) is musical poetry for the soul.
LEOPOLDO SPEAKS:
Music is a miracle and it allowed Huáscar and I to get together in the adventure of creating this production "Dos Mundos" (Two Worlds). This is the end product of several months of research and joint work. We aimed to interpret the feeling of both the academic and popular styles, and we present 14 songs that represent the Golden Age of Latin American music.
"Dos Mundos" is a musical production full of contrasts and resemblances, it is piano and lfute, it is academic and folk, is two hundred years of sound from Chopin to Shakira, passing by the sounds of Vienna or New York to the essence of popular Latin American music of Copacabana, La Bodeguita del Medio or any bar located either at barrio La Boca in Buenos Aires or at Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico City. "Dos Mundos"(Two Worlds) is a starry night that started with a serenede of Schubert and ended up in love, flesh and giving yourself away in a bolero by Manzanero, that extraordinary mixture of intellect and emotions that makes us Latin American.
I also want to share the fact that Huáscar is an extraordinary musician. He is one of the few interpreters who can transform a simple melody line into a masterpiece on the flute, such a difficult instrument. Besides, he has unlimited sound resources, it is a pleasure to create music with him.
When we selected this repertoire, we took into consideration the musical quality of each piece, its permanence on time and the refined taste of our listeners, our friends, who dream, love, feel, evoke and believe that music is an integral part of your lives.
